YSJ’s Triumphs & Challenges in 2018 - Watch Year End Video
Last year was an exciting time of growth and improvement for the Saint John Airport.
In 2018, we made significant financial investments to serve our passengers better by greatly enhancing both the airport terminal and our runways.
We set a new All-Time Traffic Record with 282,217 passengers travelling through YSJ in 2018. That's more passenger traffic than any previous year in our history. An extra 30,000 passengers in just 2 years is significant growth. Our passenger growth in the past few months made the Saint John Airport the fastest growing Atlantic NAS Airport in 2018; this includes all Atlantic Canadian airports with annual traffic of 200,000 passengers or more.
Airlines carriers are starting to take notice, but broadening air service is a long-term game. People are always asking me, “Why don’t you bring West Jet back, or add more charter destinations?”, well I want that too. Attracting a new airline carrier is a complicated process with many stakeholders and it takes time. It’s a significant risk and investment for any new airline to come to Saint John, so we build business cases to attract them by demonstrating how their investment in our city can increase their profitability. So keep flying out of YSJ because ‘success attracts success’. What this means is, the more you use our existing airlines like Air Canada, Porter Airlines, and Sunwing, the more likely they’ll offer more flights out of YSJ (we call this increased capacity), and the more likely they'll offer new destinations. The success of our airline partners will enable the Saint John Airport to attract new airline carriers like West Jet or Air Transat. The more airline carriers we have, the more competition between them, and this results in lower fares for passengers. Lower fares lead to passenger traffic growth for our airport, and the cycle continues - which is good for everyone.

On behalf of the airport, the management team, our staff, and our board of directors, I’d like to thank this community for your continued support as we strive to create an even better airport.
