Statement on COVID-19 flight suspensions
Saint John Airport President and CEO Derrick Stanford released the following statement in response to questions about recent COVID-19 related flight suspensions:
“We are in the midst of an unprecedented event and things are continuing to evolve quickly.
The impacts of COVID-19 are being felt across the country and around the world, and the Saint John Airport is no different.
The loss of any activity is felt in airports our size, and so recent announcements made by our airline partners will certainly have an impact – the extent to which we’ll be assessing over the coming weeks and months.
I can assure the community that we’re a robust organization that has enjoyed an upswing in community support and passenger traffic over the last few years. While we’d envisioned a different 2020, we are prepared to meet the challenges coming our way. We have a hard working and versatile board of business leaders and strong relationships with our airline partners, both of which will serve us well as we navigate our way through these unparalleled times.
The health and safety of our airport community, the larger community, the travellers we serve, and our employees is very important to us. Since January we have been working to balance that with the evolving needs of the aviation industry – all while factoring in the latest developments in this constantly changing situation. Most can appreciate this is challenging for all involved.
We will continue to communicate throughout this situation and provide updates when warranted.
Until then, our thoughts are with those most impacted by this pandemic: those who’ve fallen sick and died, the courageous health-care professionals on the front lines and the governments who are responding to the needs of their populations.”
